What Defines an Entrepreneur?

There have been many definition of what an entrepreneur actually is, but the truth is it all comes down to philosophy mixed with a good business sense. Some people are happy just selling products that are tried and true, while other people are not happy unless they push the envelope of normality in an attempt to make money working for themselves while looking at the journey not just the destination.

What defines an entrepreneur?

The definition is not something you can pull out of your hat; you cannot find a "perfect" definition by looking in the latest Websters. You will find a differing definition depending on whom you ask and how much they have had to drink (in some cases).

There are different types of entrepreneurs. For instance, a lifestyle entrepreneur wants the steady income while being their own boss, but these types of people are happy just selling or reusing what other people have already done. There is no cutting edge newness involved with this experience. However, they do get to work their own hours, work with their preferred people, and experience life on their own terms.

On the other hand, a social entrepreneur is the foundation of change in many aspects of our society. These people change the world with new ideas, products, and beliefs. These type of people are definitely rare, and for some people, this is the true identifier of a "real" entrepreneurship. These types of people push the envelope changing society as a whole whether through invention or thought.

Many people consider any small business owner a entrepreneurship. However, this is not always true. So when you wonder what defines an entrepreneur, you will find many definitions. The truth is that there is more than one simple answer.

Being an entrepreneur has to do with an attitude, work ethics, goals, and more. Once person once said that entrepreneurship is concentrating more on the journey instead of the destination. This is a very true sentiment. Looking to the future is fine and dandy, but you lose yourself if you forget that it is the day to day activities and goals that may your future a better place to be.

Some characteristics associated with an amateur would be local thinking, snap decisions, never getting past the idea phase, using knockoffs, understands the trade, artistic, has a company, and more. However, a professional is more career minded, mixed gender. A leader rather than a boss, a global thinker, a networker, and innovative. The attitude is the big difference. Are you thinking small time or on a global market? Are you thinking small or big? What are your goals? Are you focused on getting help when it is needed or being the lone ranger?
